DEATHTRAP at Millbrook just in time for Halloween!

It was January 2020 when I announced here that I’d be directing Ira Levin’s Deathtrap at Millbrook Playhouse that summer…and then the world turned upside down. Here we are in fall 2021, and I’m ever so grateful to be heading back to the barn to complete this circle and do the show, which runs October 22-30. More info here.

Deathtrap Quotes Souv Prog.jpg

Those quotes are from the back of the souvenir program of the original production. I’m thrilled especially to finally do this show. Deathtrap remains Broadway’s longest running thriller. This will be my third thriller at Millbrook (after 2015’s Dial ‘M’ for Murder and 2016’s Wait Until Dark). It’s also my very first chance to work on an Ira Levin play, and as you may know from my Shows for Someday feature in this space on his melodrama Dr. Cook’s Garden, he’s one of my favorite writers—both as a playwright and novelist.

So: Pennsylvania, here I come!

Five shows before the end of 2021 - Judson Theatre Company, Millbrook Playhouse, and more!

The next two shows at Judson Theatre Company have something in common: Stan Zimmerman! First up is JTC’s first special event, An Evening on the Lanai: Remembering The Golden Girls.

Stan, who was a writer in Season One of The Golden Girls, will take us down memory lane with fun behind the scenes stories, little known facts, and more with host Alexander Rodriguez. There’ll be sing-along, trivia, Q&A and more! It’s Sunday, November 14th at 7 pm at Owens Auditorium at BPAC. Get your tickets here!

After that, Stan stays on to direct the regional theatre premiere of the holiday comedy he wrote with Christian McLaughlin, Yes, Virginia. It plays Owens Auditorium at BPAC in Pinehurst from Thursday, November 18-Sunday, November 21 for four performances only.

And JudsonRADIO will be back with two radio shows this fall in partnership with Muirfield Broadcasting, plus I’ll be at Millbrook Playhouse directing Deathtrap. And I’ve got several shows already lined up for 2022 with more possibilities in the pipeline. It’s nice to have creative in-person work again!

Returning Guest on BPAC's BEHIND THE CURTAIN

Joe Brown, Executive Director of Bradshaw Performing Arts Center (BPAC), asked me to return to the Behind The Curtain podcast—I was the guest on the very first episode, and it’s so nice to be asked back for Episode #10!

BPAC is such a treasure, and it’s an honor to have Judson Theatre Company included in the BPAC family of resident organizations.

Shows for Someday #4: THE LITTLE HUT (Part 3)

BROADWAY AFTERLIFE

There’s a film version of The Little Hut, made at MGM’s studios in England and starring Ava Gardner, Stewart Granger, and David Niven. The screenplay by F. Hugh Herbert (author of the landmark sex comedy The Moon is Blue) is by and the whole story is told in flashback with a lengthy prologue and so bowdlerized it takes most of the naughty fun out of the piece, even with that cast. It has a catchy title song.

It had been originally purchased by Alexander Korda as a screen vehicle for Zsa Zsa Gabor opposite George Sanders (they were married then)—how’s that for tantalizing casting?

Like many of our Shows for Someday, The Little Hut went on to a long and happy life in regional and stock productions. Some of the other productions and stars:

1954 stock tour: Hiram Sherman, Barbara Bel Geddes (!), directed by Morton da Costa

Erlanger Theatre, Buffalo – Veronica Lake

1954 Drury Lane Theatre, Chicago – Marie Wilson and Melville Cooper

Original Los Angeles production – Marsha Hunt, Leon Ames (!), Patrick O’Neal

1955 – Kurt Kasznar, Lakewood Theatre, PA

1961 – Denise Darcel at Garden Center Theatre

1974 – major London revival with Geraldine McEwan

And also in 1961, it ran at the historic Pinehurst Playhouse, in the same town where Judson Theatre Company is…the playhouse is now a retail building in the center of the village.

Janie Dee Little Hut.jpg

The most recent larger-scale production is the limited-run 2010 London revival starring Janie Dee and Aden Gillett. Most critics note the charm in the script, and also the need to keep it in its period. The Little Hut could still work today, though the script could use a touch-up and some cutting. Check it out!
